Every country has a certain section of the population that some sort of health issue. Men compared to women, men are more prone to health issues. Be it the developing or developed country, men do face health issues. The US is one of those countries, which has many cases of men with health issues. From depression to heart disease and diabetes, men in the US are facing multiple issues. This has also brought down the life expectancy for men to 76.3 in 2016. One of the leading causes of death in men is heart disease, which is accounting for a combined 46.7 percent of all male deaths that year. Moreover, physical disease, mental health issues are common among men in the U.S., with suicide ranking the seventh leading cause of death.

On average, men pay less attention to their health compared to women. Moreover, men are likely to-

  • Drink alcohol and use tobacco
  • Make risky choices
  • Not seeing a doctor for regular check-ups

Apart from regular disease, cancer, and depression, men also have unique issues such as prostate cancer and prostate enlargement. Many of these issues faced by men are preventable by doing regular exercise, bringing down smoking habits and alcohol consumption. Moreover, regular check-ups and screening tests can further help in bringing down the disease.

Male Depression-

Many men in the US complain about being irritated or isolated. The sudden increase in the drinking and smoking session. These unhealthy coping strategies may be clues that you have male depression. Depression in men is becoming more and more common. When it occurs in men, it is masked by unhealthy behavior.  For a number of reasons, male depression often goes undiagnosed and can have devastating consequences when it goes untreated. Men fail to recognize these depression symptoms. Some of the signs of undiagnosed male depression are-

Failure to recognize Depression-

You may think that being sad or emotional is the main symptom of depression. However, this is not the primary depression symptom. For instance, headaches, digestive problems, fatigue, irritability or chronic pain can sometimes indicate depression.

Downplaying signs and symptoms-

You may not be able to recognize the symptom affecting you, or you may not want to admit to yourself or anyone else depressed.

Reluctance to discuss depression symptoms-

You may not be open to talking about your feeling with family or close friends. Like many others, you may have learned to emphasize self-control.  You might think not to express feelings and emotions.

Resisting Mental Health Treatment-

Even if you think you have depression, you may avoid getting medical assistance since you are worried about depression stigma applied on.

Male Depression and Suicide-

There have many cases in the US where depressed men are engaging in suicidal attempts. Some of the incidents depressed men engaged in are-

  • Use methods that are more likely to be lethal, such as guns
  • Act more quickly on suicidal thoughts
  • Show fewer warning signs, such as talking about suicide

Alcohol Abuse-

This is yet another health issue, which is faced by men in the US. Some men end up consuming too much alcohol and some of the symptoms are-

  • Temporary blackouts or memory loss.
  • Recurrent arguments or fights with family members or friends as well as irritability, depression, or mood swings.
  • Continuing use of alcohol to relax, to cheer up, to sleep, to deal with problems, or to feel “normal.”
  • Headache, anxiety, insomnia, nausea, or other unpleasant symptoms when you stop drinking.

Alcohol abuse completely different from alcohol dependency. During abuse, the person may use alcohol in excess and drink on a regular basis. The person may end up having heavy alcohol counts on a regular basis. Moreover, if the person is dependent on alcohol, the person will need to drink regularly to bring down the stress.

Heart Disease-

Year by year, the case of heart disease in men is increasing in the US. Every year, there are much death occurred due to heart disease in men. Some of the signs and symptoms of heart disease in men are-

  • Difficulty in breath after moderate physical exertion, like walking up a flight of stairs
  • Sense of discomfort or squeezing in your chest that lasts for 30 minutes to a few hours
  • Unexplained pain in your upper torso, neck, and jaw

If the heart problem is due to blood vessels, then is often signaled-

  • Chest pain (angina)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Changes in your extremities, such as pain, tingling


There are millions of cases in the US where men face Type 2 Diabetes. This type of diabetes is also called non-insulin dependent diabetes and is the common form of diabetes, which is affecting 90% to 95% of the 13 million men with diabetes.

Unlike people with Type 1 diabetes, people facing type 2 diabetes produce insulin. However, this insulin is not enough for the body and the pancreases are not recognizable.  When there is not enough insulin in the body, there is no fuel to work and less blood circulation.

Long-term Solution-

Since the number of health issues faced by men in the US, there is a requirement of long-term solutions. Proper fitness regime and educating men right from the young age will help in bringing down the health issues. Neglecting men's health is not only inefficient but is also like bringing down the quality of life. The healthcare system in the US is working towards controllable chronic illnesses, such as hypertension, diabetes, and asthma, to go unchecked, generating serious adverse health effects. Men need to start working on their regime right away to get long-term positive health effects.

The main reason behind the increasing case of negative health among men is the fear of neglect. Men might feel they will be under scrutiny and will be in news for the wrong reason.

Connecting to the doctor and sharing your health issues is one of the best ways men can overcome. In the US, there are regular programs and seminars to bring men together and discuss the issue. Men do have different health care needs than women, and there are variations as well with characteristics other than sex. Lifestyle and behavior change will defiantly work towards the positive health condition.
