Cladding the Tiles
But with time everything changed. Walls have long been considered the original "calling card" of every room, and the variety of materials and finishing techniques help give them an almost unique look.
A large number of types of wallpaper, countless collections of ceramic tiles or marble tiles, various decorative plasters, even amateurs with a similar arsenal can create real masterpieces. For example, a material like a tile seems to be simply universal - it can be used to decorate any surface. Also, the coating technology is not as complicated as it might seem. It's even easier with wallpaper - its variety is simply astonishing, and even a beginner will have no trouble pasting.
And thanks to decorative tiles, which will help to easily imitate surfaces of various natural materials, everyone will be able to equip the chosen room according to any historical epoch, be it an ancient drawing room, a medieval grotto, or an exquisite dressing table from the time of the Marquise. But first, you need to prepare all surfaces for finishing. And with this, we will begin our story. Be patient, arm yourself with tools, and get to work.
Before incorporating all your ideas for wall decoration, you should first clean the surface of old finishing materials - tiles, wallpaper, paneling, etc., corrosion products, and other contaminants. The next step is to level the walls, apply a primer, and then caulk the walls. Qualitative and correct execution of all preliminary work will help to obtain a high-quality coating.
Clean the walls
There are several ways to clean the walls:
- Mechanical cleaning. It is done with tools such as a brush, spatula, sander. With their help, you can always get a well-leveled surface.
- Chemical cleaning. It consists of degreasing the surface of the walls, which is carried out with detergents or special alkaline washes, depending on the type of contamination. This also includes preventing the appearance of fungal plaque by applying special antifungal solutions to the surface.
- Thermal cleaning. This cleaning is used to remove rust or scale with a burner flame.
The answer to the question of which method is suitable for removing old finishing materials depends on the type of materials themselves. A combination of cleaning methods is also quite possible.
Remove old tiles
The process of removing old tiles from the walls is time consuming. It's great if you have a pickguard in your arsenal, although this job can be done manually. In any case, in addition to work tools, you will need a respirator and safety glasses.
Step 1. Place a putty knife in the center of one of the tiles and hit it firmly with a hammer. Move the spatula into the crack that appears and push it deeper, tapping gently. Then use it as a lever to separate the ceramic pieces.
Step 2. To remove the rest of the tiles, place a trowel under one edge of the tile and gently tap it well under the tile. It can now be used as a lever to separate the tile from the wall surface. You need to be prepared for the fact that some of the tiles will come off completely, and some of them will fall apart.
Step 3. When the surface is free, the putty on which the tiles were laid should be softened, for example with a fan heater, and then scraped off with a scraper.
If the tiles are even and well maintained, then it is quite possible to cover with new tiles over old ones. But first, you need to make sure with a level that the surface is flat in all directions. If any of the old tiles are slightly behind the surface, it should be repaired before laying a new one.
