What You Should Eat Before & After a Workout

Not eating before a workout makes you feel nauseated, lightheaded, lethargic, and dizzy. And if you do not have a good meal after your workouts, you will compromise your performance and delay your gains. However, it is not always possible to eat before a workout and sometimes it helps with boosting your metabolism as well. But if you get a chance, eat a healthy snack a couple of hours before hitting the gym. Working out on an empty stomach is alright for most unless you have blood sugar issues. But you should always fuel up after a rigorous workout. Talk to certified nutritionists with FITFEAST for the best gains and quick results.

Pre – and Post-workout Meal Tips

  • Stay Hydrated

You should drink plenty of water throughout the day, not only after a workout. Otherwise, your heart rate might go beyond the necessary and you might get cramps. Drinking lemonade is a good way to hydrate as well. Your levels of hydration can be judged by the color of your urine; clear urine means properly hydrated. There are no rules when it comes to drinking enough water; you do not have to “drink at least 3 liters of water every day”. Listen to your body. Drinking a glass of water before and sipping during workouts is recommended.

  • Pre-workout snack

You need not cut down on carbs completely unless you are competing for a bodybuilding competition. Crabs are the most important source of energy because they are broken down into glucose that keep your cells working hard. Eating carb-rich foods before a workout is recommended because you can burn the extra calories and have enough energy to do that. They prevent you from feeling weak or tired. You can eat fruits, oatmeal, crackers, rice, a piece of toast, etc. before a workout.

  • Consume plenty of protein

Your muscles need extra protein when you work out for 60 to minutes at the gym. Weight training breaks down muscle fibers that need protein to rebuild and strengthen. You can eat some protein-rich foods for your pre-workout meals as well. This ensures that your muscle fibers are repaired as soon as possible. If you do not consume enough protein, you will lose fat but will not gain enough muscle to perform well and look good.
